Welcome to the Service Learning Faculty Page!
Welcome to the service learning faculty page. Please take a moment to read the history of how CAVE came to be the professional clearance and placement center for CSU, Chico service learning courses related to service in the Chico Unified School District (CUSD). The feature box to the right contains Executive Memorandum AA0 09-02 from the Office of the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs that explains the clearance process for placement of CSU, Chico students at school sites in the Chico Unified School District. It outlines, in detail, the requirements for participating in a service learning course, the responsibilities of the faculty, and the support provided by CAVE. Please read the EM AA0 09-02 and hopefully any questions you may have about the partnership and the responsibilities of all concerned will be answered. Please contact the CAVE Service Learning department for any questions or further explanation.

Faculty Continuing with a Service Learning Course
CAVE is looking forward to the 2010-2011 school year as we continue to refine our process for our service learning faculty and students. It is our hope everyone is satisfied with the support received by CAVE as we look forward to continuing our support in the coming school year. The CAVE Service Learning Student Director, David Burger, is the first-line of contact and will communicate with faculty by email before the start of the fall semester to schedule an in-class orientation and to receive a course roster. If you have not received an email by the first day of school, please contact caveclassbaseprogram@csuchico.edu to schedule an in-class orientation and attach your course roster and syllabus.
Please note: It is mandatory that CAVE receive a course roster and syllabus. These documents help us be knowledgeable of the course requirements and help us track the students that do not complete the CAVE clearance packet. Please review EM AA0 09-02 from the Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs, which outlines the clearance process for placement of CSU, Chico students at school sites in the Chico Unified School District.
New Process Implemented for the 2010/2011 School Year
This year the CAVE website will have a returning service learning student packet. A student is considered a returning service learning student if they previously completed a CAVE Service Learning Packet for another course, which would have on file a letter of recommendation, a TB test, a copy of their student ID and a clearance form signed by the CAVE Service Learning Program Manger, Carla Shields. Each semester a returning student plans to participate in a service learning course, he/she will still need to complete the following: Student contact and introduction form, a personal and professional fitness form, and a risk and assumption form. CAVE keeps files on service learning students in the office for four years. This process should see service learning students through their initial clearance to graduation. It is our goal at CAVE to streamline the process while continuing to support the Associated Students, CSU, Chico, and Community Partners' risk management requirements. Please contact the CAVE Service Learning Program Manager, Carla Shields, at 898-5819 for further explanation or questions.
