Annual Events

Recycle Mania - Recycle Mania is a friendly competition and benchmarking tool for college and university recycling programs to promote waste reduction activities to their campus communities. Over a 10-week period (spring semester), schools report recycling and trash data which are then ranked according to who collects the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, the least amount of trash per capita, or have the highest recycling rate. In 2009, Chico State was ranked in the top five percent for the waste minimization category, and in the top sixteen percent for the grand champion category. Participate by recycling and by encouraging your fellow students and faculty members to do the same! More Information

Earth Month - April is Earth Month! Throughout the month, AS Recycling works together with other environmentally concerned organizations such as the Butte Environmental Council, Environmental Affairs Council, and Environmental Action Resource Center to promote awareness about environmentalism and to hold fun and interactive activities that educate participants about the Earth. Some of these events include Eco-Fest, Earth Day and Recycling Week.

Diversion Excursion - Since 2001, AS Recycling and University Housing & Food Service have joined efforts to reduce the mountains of waste generated during residence hall move-out. DE volunteers set up booths at the entrances of all on-campus residence halls to collect items that residents no longer want or may discard as they are moving out. These items are then donated to local charities including the Esplanade House, ARC, Food Not Bombs and many more. In 2009 we collected 18,837 pounds of materials that would have otherwise gone to the landfill.
